Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Dentistry, was established as the newest faculty of our university on the 15 July Health and Arts Campus by Presidential Decree No. 1613 dated October 3, 2019, published in the Official Gazette No. 30908 dated October 4, 2019. It commenced its educational, teaching, and research activities in the 2021-2022 academic year. The Faculty of Dentistry’s educational program is five years long, aligned with the Turkish Higher Education Basic Qualifications Framework, and meets national and international standards.
To enhance the quality and capacity of scientific research and to create an international collaboration/interaction ecosystem within our Faculty of Dentistry, the Department of Dental Biomaterials, a multidisciplinary department affiliated with the Dokuz Eylül University Institute of Health Sciences, has been established. The Dental Biomaterials Master’s Program, the first and pioneering program in Turkey, offering innovative career opportunities to our graduate dentists, commenced in the spring semester of 2021-2022. Our program continues successfully with the participation of students from both Turkey and abroad. Our faculty members, working in eight departments within the Faculty of Dentistry, conduct educational and research activities in this program and provide consultancy to our students for innovative national/international projects.
Dental specialization training is a competency-based educational process that includes advanced theoretical knowledge and clinical applications not covered in undergraduate education. Within a very short time since its establishment, our Faculty has reached educational standards with its infrastructure, technical equipment, and competent academic staff capable of providing specialization training curriculum, and began training its first specialization students in February 2023. In the following period, it achieved the success of admitting students in the top 5 in the DUS placement results, becoming a preferred Faculty.
Dokuz Eylül University continues to be a pioneer in the health sector and to serve the public good. Regarding oral and dental health, an integral part of human health; Our Faculty’s Oral and Dental Health Application and Research Center, staffed by our faculty members, began accepting patients in March 2022 as a reference center to meet the significant needs of İzmir and the Aegean Region. To date, it has served approximately 45,000 patients in our region. Recently, in audits conducted by the Presidency of Quality, Accreditation and Employee Rights in Healthcare as part of the “Quality Assessments in Healthcare” program, our Center achieved a score of 97.3 points.
